Parking and Back-Up Sensor System Description - Control/Function
Basic Control/Function
The parking and back-up sensor control unit receives the transmission range switch signal via the B-CAN, and detects whether the vehicle is moving forward, backward, or is parked.
The sensors send out ultrasonic waves, receive waves reflected by an obstacle, determine the distance, and use the buzzer and the multi-information display (MID) to tell the driver that an obstacle is near.
The front corner sensors work any time the shift lever is shifted out of P position, until the vehicle reaches about 9 mph (15 km/h). They do not come back on until slowing down to about 5 mph (8 km/h) or less.
The rear corner and rear center sensors are only activated in shift to R position.
The indicator in the parking and back-up sensor switch comes on when the system is on.
The sensors must be free of debris, snow, and ice to work correctly.

Sounding Pattern
The alarm sounding pattern and display of the obstacle detection location are performed by the obstacle detection indication requests and alarm sounding requests from the parking and back up sensor control unit.
As shown in the following table, the time of sounding the buzzer is changed depending on the detection distance.
