Thermostat Removal, Installation, and Test

Engine Coolant - Drain
Drain the engine coolant

Battery - Remove
Do the battery removal procedure
.
3.
Splash Separator - Remove
Remove the splash separator.
4.
Air Cleaner - Remove
Remove the air cleaner
.
5.
Harness Holder - Remove (A/T)
Remove the harness clamps (A) securing the harness brackets (B).
6.
Thermostat - Remove
1.
Disconnect the lower radiator hose (A).
2.
A/T: Disconnect the water bypass hose (B).
3.
Remove the thermostat.
Replace the thermostat if it is stuck in the open position at room temperature.

Thermostat - Test
To test a closed thermostat:
1.
Suspend the thermostat (A) in a container of water. Do not let the thermostat and the thermometer (B) touch the bottom of the hot container.
2.
Heat the water and check the temperature with a thermometer. Check the temperature at which the thermostat first opens, and at which it is fully open.
3.
Measure the lift height of the thermostat when it is fully open.
Standard Thermostat
Lift Height:
Above 10.0 mm (0.394 in)
Starts Opening:
M/T: 169?176 °F (76?80 °C)
A/T: 176?183 °F (80?84 °C)
Fully Open:
M/T: 194 °F (90 °C)
A/T: 203 °F (95 °C)

Thermostat - Install
1.
Install the thermostat assembly (A) with a new O-ring (B).
2.
Connect the lower radiator hose (A).
3.
A/T: Connect the water bypass hose (B).

Harness Holder - Install (A/T)
Install the harness clamps (A) securing the harness brackets (B).
3.
Air Cleaner - Install
Install the air cleaner
.
4.
Splash Separator - Install
Install the splash separator.
5.
Battery - Install
Do the battery installation procedure
.
6.
Engine Coolant - Refill
Refill the radiator with engine coolant, and bleed the air from the cooling system
