Brake Master Cylinder Removal and Installation

Do not spill brake fluid on the vehicle; it may damage the paint. If brake fluid does contact the paint, wash it off immediately with water.

NOTE:
Press the brake pedal several times to deplete the vacuum in the brake booster.
Be careful when handling the master cylinder. Do not hold it at the piston, or the piston may separate from the body. If the piston separates from the body, then the master cylinder must be replaced. Do not reinsert the piston back into the master cylinder body.
After removal, plug the end of the hose and joints to prevent spilling brake fluid.

1. Brake Fluid - Remove

Remove the brake fluid from the master cylinder reservoir with a syringe.

2. Under-Hood Fuse/Relay Box - Move

Remove the under-hood fuse/relay box mount nut (A).

Release the clips (B).

3.
Move the under-hood fuse/relay box (C) aside.

NOTE: Do not disconnect the fuse/relay box connectors.

3. Master Cylinder - Remove

Disconnect the brake fluid level switch connector (A).

2.
Disconnect the brake lines (B) from the master cylinder (C). To prevent spills, cover the hose joints with clean rags or shop towels.

Remove the master cylinder from the brake booster (D).

NOTE: Be careful not to bend or damage the brake lines.

4.
Remove the O-ring (E) from the master cylinder.

1. Master Cylinder - Install

Install the new O-ring (A) to the master cylinder (B).

NOTE:
Coat the O-ring with silicone grease (Shin-Etsu G40M).
Make sure not to get any silicone grease on the terminal part of the connectors and switches, especially if you have silicone grease on your hands or gloves.

Install the master cylinder to the brake booster (C).

NOTE:
Be careful not to bend or damage the brake lines.
Be careful not to damage the piston surface.

3.
Connect the brake lines (D) to the master cylinder.

4.
Connect the brake fluid level switch connector (E).

Install the under-hood fuse/relay box (A).


3. Brake System - Bleed


4. Brake Pedal Height and Free Play - Check


5. Brake Drag - Check

Spin the wheels to check for brake drag.
