DTC Advanced Diagnostics: P0011
DTC P0011:Variable Valve Timing Control (VTC) A System Malfunction

General Description
The powertrain control module (PCM) monitors variable valve timing control (VTC) actuator A for a sufficiently fast and precise angle positioning according to the set point angle specification. Detected malfunctions are separated into slow response (actuator adjusts too slow) and target (actuator does not adjust) faults. If the deviation occurs between the target position and the actual position or if the actual position does not reach to target position, the PCM detects a malfunction and stores a DTC.

Malfunction Threshold
Slow response
Either of the condition is met at least 4 times:
?
The actual angle does not reach the target value within running monitor cycle for at least 2 to 3 seconds.
?
The actual angle changed more than 2 ° during the defined monitoring cycle for at least 2 to 3 seconds.

Stuck
The following condition is met at least 4 times:
?
The actual angle changed 2 ° or less during the defined monitoring cycle for at least 2 to 3 seconds.

Possible Cause
NOTE: The causes shown may not be a complete list of all potential problems, and it is possible that there may be other causes.
VTC actuator A stuck
VTC actuator A slow response
VTC actuator A failure
VTC oil control solenoid valve A failure

Confirmation Procedure
Operating Condition
Start the engine. Hold the engine speed [Engine Speed] at 3,000 rpm without load (in neutral) until the radiator fan comes on, then let it idle.

Diagnosis Details
Conditions for setting the DTC
When a malfunction is detected, the MIL comes on and a Pending DTC, a Confirmed DTC, and the freeze data are stored in the PCM memory.

Conditions for clearing the DTC
The MIL is cleared if the malfunction does not return in three consecutive trips in which the diagnostic runs. The MIL, the Pending DTC, the Confirmed DTC, and the freeze data can be cleared with the scan tool Clear command.
