The suspension system holds the wheels and axles in position and absorbs road vibrations. It also allows steering, directional stability and recoverability, while minimizing tire wear. In order to achieve all those requirements, the wheels have a steering axis inclination angle, a camber angle, caster angle and toe-in angle. Wheel alignment is the combination of these angles relevant to the wheel.

Camber is the side to side tilt of the tire compared to true vertical as seen from the front of the vehicle. This angle is measured for both the front and rear tires. Camber affects vehicle ride quality, handling and tire wear. Camber is measured as the number of degrees that the tire varies from true vertical: |

If the top of the tire is leaning away from the vehicle, camber is positive. | |

If the top of the tire is leaning towards the vehicle, camber is negative. | |

If the tire is parallel to true vertical, it has zero camber. | | | |
