Steering Column/EPS Control Unit Removal and Installation

NOTE:
SRS components are located in this area. Review the SRS component locations, and the precautions and procedures before doing repairs or service.
Do not release the lock lever until the steering column/EPS control unit is installed. If the lock lever is released before installation, adjust the steering column after installation.

2. Steering Column Tilt and Telescopic Position - Set

Set the steering column to the center tilt position, and to the center telescopic position.

4. Steering Joint Cover - Remove


5. Steering Joint - Disconnect

1.
Hold the spline shaft (A) on the column with a piece of wire (B) between the joint yoke (C) of the spline shaft and the joint yoke (D) of the spline tube to prevent the lower spline shaft from pulling out.





2.
Remove the steering joint bolt (A).





3.
Disconnect the steering joint (A) from the pinion shaft (B).

NOTE:
If the center guide (C) is in place and has not moved, leave it in place.
If the center guide has come off, discard it.

7. Combination Switch - Remove

1.
Disconnect the connectors (A).





2.
Remove the combination switch (A) from the steering column shaft.

10. Steering Column/EPS Control Unit - Remove

Without keyless access system

With keyless access system

1.
Disconnect the connector(s) (A).

2.
Remove the clips (B).





3.
Disconnect the connectors (A).


4.
Remove the clips (B).

5.
Remove the steering column/EPS control unit (C).

1. Steering Column/EPS Control Unit - Install

1.
Install the steering column/EPS control unit (A).


2.
Tighten the bolts (B) and the nuts (C) to the specified torque in the numbered sequence shown.

3.
Install the clips (D).

4.
Connect the connectors (E).





Without keyless access system

With keyless access system

5.
Install the clips (A).

6.
Connect the connector(s) (B).

5. Combination Switch - Install


1.
Install the combination switch (A).

2.
Tighten the screws (B) in the numbered sequence shown.





3.
Connect the connectors (A).

7. Steering Joint - Connect


1.
Cut the wire (A).

2.
Slip the lower end of the steering joint (B) onto the pinion shaft (C).

NOTE:
Pinion shaft with center guide: Install the steering joint by aligning the center guide (D).
Pinion shaft without center guide: Position the steering column by aligning the gap (E) within the angle.






3.
Align the bolt hole (A) on the steering joint with the groove (B) around the pinion shaft.

4.
Loosely install the new steering joint bolt (C).

5.
Be sure that the joint bolt is securely in the groove in the pinion shaft.

6.
Tighten the steering joint bolt to the specified torque.

7.
Pull on the steering joint to make sure that the steering joint is fully seated.

8. Steering Joint Cover - Install

1.
Install the clip (A) and the push nuts (B) in the numbered sequence shown.

NOTE: Check the steering joint cover for damage and cracks. If the steering joint cover is cracked, replace the steering joint cover.

11. Steering - Check

1.
After installation, check these items:

Start the engine, allow it to idle, and turn the steering wheel from lock to lock several times.
Check that the EPS indicator does not come on.
Check the steering wheel spoke angle. If steering spoke angles to the right and left are not equal (steering wheel and rack are not centered), correct the engagement of the joint/pinion shaft splines.
