Transmission Range Switch Test
1. Air Cleaner - Remove

2. SCS - Short

1.
Connect the HDS to the data link connector (DLC) (A) located under the driver's side of the dashboard.

2.
Turn the ignition switch to ON (II), or press the engine start/stop button to select the ON mode.

3.
Make sure the HDS communicates with the vehicle. If it does not communicate, go to the DLC circuit troubleshooting.

4.
Turn the ignition switch to LOCK (0), or press the engine start/stop button to select the OFF mode.

5.
Jump the SCS line with the HDS.

3. PCM with Bracket - Remove

1.
Disconnect PCM connectors A, B, and C.

NOTE: PCM connectors A, B, and C have symbols (A=?, B=?, C=?) embossed on them for identification.

2.
Remove the harness clamps (D).

3.
Remove the harness holder (E).

4.
Remove the PCM (F) with the bracket.

4. Transmission Range Switch - Continuity Test

1.
Remove the harness clamps (A).

2.
Remove the harness holder (A).

3.
Disconnect the transmission range switch connector (A).

Transmission Range Switch Connector (5-Position Continuously Variable Transmission)

Transmission Range Switch Connector (6-Position Continuously Variable Transmission)

4.
Check for continuity between the terminals at the transmission range switch connector (A). There should be continuity between the terminals in the table for each shift lever position.

If the test results are OK, the transmission range switch test is finished, and install all removed parts.
If there is no continuity between any terminals, check the transmission range switch installation. If the switch installation is OK, and check the control shaft end clearance.

5.
Connect the transmission range switch connector.

NOTE: Check the connector for corrosion, dirt, or oil, and clean or repair if necessary.

5. Selector Control Shaft End Clearance - Check

1.
Apply the parking brake.

2.
Move the shift lever to N.

3.
Remove the control shaft cover (A).

4.
Remove the transmission range switch (A).

5.
Check the end of the control shaft (A).

Control Shaft Specification
Width (B):
6.1?6.2 mm (0.240?0.244 in)
End Gap (C):
1.8?2.0 mm (0.071?0.079 in)

If the measurement at the end of the control shaft is within the specification, replace the transmission range switch.
If the measurement is out of the specification, repair the control shaft end, and recheck the transmission range switch continuity.

6. Transmission Range Switch - Install

1.
Make sure the control lever (A) is in the N position. If necessary, move the control lever to the N position.

NOTE: Do not use the control shaft (B) to adjust the shift position. If the control shaft tips are squeezed together it will cause a faulty signal or position due to play between the control shaft and the transmission range switch.

2.
Set the transmission range switch (A) to the N position. Align the cutouts (B) on the rotary-frame with the N positioning cutouts (C) on the transmission range switch, then put a 2.0 mm (0.079 in) feeler gauge (D) in the cutouts to hold the transmission range switch in the N position.

NOTE: Be sure to use a 2.0 mm (0.079 in) feeler gauge or equivalent to hold the transmission range switch in the N position.

3.
Install the transmission range switch (A) gently on the selector control shaft (B) while holding it in the N position with the 2.0 mm (0.079 in) feeler gauge (C).

4.
Loosely install the bolts (D).

5.
Tighten the bolts (A) on the transmission range switch (B) while you continue to hold the N position.

NOTE: Do not move the transmission range switch when tightening the bolts.

6.
Remove the feeler gauge (C).

7.
Install the control shaft cover (A).

8.
Move the shift lever to P.

9.
Connect the transmission range switch connector (A).

NOTE: Check the connector for corrosion, dirt, or oil, and clean or repair if necessary.

10.
Install the harness holder (A).

11.
Install the harness clamps (A).

7. PCM with Bracket - Install

1.
Install the PCM (D) with the bracket.

2.
Install the harness holder (E).

3.
Connect PCM connectors A, B, and C.

NOTE: PCM connectors A, B, and C have symbols (A=?, B=?, C=?) embossed on them for identification.

4.
Install the harness clamps (F).

8. Air Cleaner - Install

9. Vehicle - Lift

10. Transmission Range Switch - After Install Check

1.
Turn the ignition switch to ON (II), or press the engine start/stop button to select the ON mode.

2.
Move the shift lever through all positions, and verify the transmission range switch matches with the A/T gear position indicator.

3.
Check that the engine starts in P and N, and does not start in any other shift lever position.

4.
Check that the back-up lights come on when the shift lever is in R.

5.
Start the engine, and check the shift lever operation.

6.
Turn the engine off.
