NOTE:
If the transmission housing, the torque converter housing, the differential carrier, the tapered roller bearing, the bearing outer race, or the thrust shim was removed, the bearing preload must be adjusted.
The tapered roller bearing preload inspects and adjusts with the differential assembly. The tapered roller bearing preload value needs the differential carrier bearing preload measurements. Incorrect measurements may be indicated if the differential carrier bearing preload inspection has not been completed.

3. Tapered Roller Bearing Preload - Inspect

1.
Remove the tapered roller bearing outer race (A), the 80 mm thrust shim (B), and the secondary oil guide plate (C) by heating the torque converter housing to about 212 °F (100 °C) using a heat gun (D).

NOTE:
Do not heat the transmission housing more than 212 °F (100 °C).
Let the transmission housing cool to room temperature before adjusting the tapered roller bearing preload.

2.
Install the secondary oil guide plate (A) and the 80 mm thrust shim (B).

NOTE: If you install a new 80 mm thrust shim, use the same thickness shim as the old one, or use the 1.400 mm (0.05512 in) thickness of the 80 mm shim.

3.
Place the tapered roller bearing outer race (C).

4.
Drive the tapered roller bearing outer race securely using the 15 x 135L driver handle and the 78 x 80 mm bearing driver attachment so there is no clearance between the tapered roller bearing outer race, the 80 mm thrust shim, and the torque converter housing.

6.
Apply transmission fluid to the carrier bearing outer race (A) and the carrier bearings of the CVT differential assembly (B).

7.
Install the CVT differential assembly.

8.
Apply transmission fluid to the tapered roller bearing outer race (C) and the tapered roller bearings of the final drive shaft assembly (D).

9.
Install the final drive shaft assembly.

10.
Apply transmission fluid to the bearing outer races of the torque converter housing.

11.
Install the dowel pins (A).

12.
Install a new gasket (B).

13.
Install the torque converter housing (C), and tighten the bolts in a crisscross pattern in at least two steps.

14.
Rotate the CVT differential assembly in both directions to seat the bearings using the preload inspection tool and a wrench.

15.
Measure the tapered bearing starting torque; CVT differential assembly and the final drive shaft total preload using the preload inspection tool, a torque wrench (A), and a socket (B).

NOTE: Measure the starting torque at normal room temperature in both directions.

Standard

New Bearing:

10.63?24.08 N·m (108.4?245.5 kgf·cm, 94.1?213.1 lbf·in)

Reused Bearing:

9.38?22.83 N·m (95.6?232.8 kgf·cm, 83.0?202.1 lbf·in)

16.
If the measurement is out of the standard, remove the 80 mm thrust shim, and measure its thickness.

17.
Select a new 80 mm thrust shim.

To increase the starting torque, increase thickness of the 80 mm thrust shim.
To decrease the starting torque, decrease the thickness of the 80 mm thrust shim.
Changing the 80 mm thrust shim to the next size will increase or decrease the starting torque about 0.5? 0.6 N·m (5.10?6.12 kgf·cm, 3.8?4.5 lbf·in).
Do not use more than two thrust shims to adjust the starting torque.
