VSA DTC Troubleshooting: 86-19

DTC 86-19: F-CAN Communication With Steering Angle Sensor Malfunction

NOTE:

	Troubleshoot any PGM-FI DTCs first.
	Before you troubleshoot, record all freeze data and any on-board snapshot, and review the how to troubleshoot the VSA system.

DTC check:

DTC check

?1.	Turn the ignition switch to ON (II), or press the engine start/stop button to select the ON mode.

?2.	Clear the DTC with the HDS.

?3.	Turn the ignition switch to LOCK (0), then turn it to ON (II) again, or select the OFF mode, then the ON mode.

?4.

Check for DTCs with the HDS.

Is DTC 86-19 indicated?


	YES

If only DTC 86-19 is indicated, go to step 2.


	YES

If DTC 86-11 is also indicated, go to DTC 86-11.?


	NO

Intermittent failure, the system is OK at this time. Refer to intermittent failures troubleshooting.?

Open wire check (F CAN-L, F CAN-H lines):

Open wire check (F CAN-L, F CAN-H lines)

?1.	Turn the ignition switch to LOCK (0), or press the engine start/stop button to select the OFF mode.

?2.

Disconnect the following connectors.

VSA modulator-control unit 21P connector

Steering angle sensor 4P connector

?3.

Check for continuity between test points 1 and 2.

Test condition	IG LOCK (0) or OFF mode
	VSA modulator-control unit 21P connector: disconnected
	Steering angle sensor 4P connector: disconnected
Test circuit	F CAN-L
Test point 1	VSA modulator-control unit 21P connector No. 15 (RED)
Test point 2	Steering angle sensor 4P connector No. 3 (RED)

Test circuit	F CAN-H
Test point 1	VSA modulator-control unit 21P connector No. 8 (WHT)
Test point 2	Steering angle sensor 4P connector No. 2 (WHT)

Is there continuity?


	YES

The F CAN-L and F CAN-H wires are OK. Go to step 3.


	NO

Repair an open in the wire between the steering angle sensor and the VSA modulator-control unit.?

Open wire check (IG1 VSA/ABS line):

Open wire check (IG1 VSA/ABS line)

?1.	Turn the ignition switch to ON (II), or press the engine start/stop button to select the ON mode.

?2.

Measure the voltage between test points 1 and 2.

Test condition	IG ON (II) or ON mode
	VSA modulator-control unit 21P connector: disconnected
	Steering angle sensor 4P connector: disconnected
Test circuit	IG1 VSA/ABS
Test point 1	Steering angle sensor 4P connector No. 1 (YEL)
Test point 2	Body ground

Is there battery voltage?


	YES

The IG1 VSA/ABS wire is OK. Go to step 4.


	NO

Repair an open in the wire between the No. B10 (7.5 A) fuse in the under-dash fuse/relay box and the steering angle sensor.?

Open wire check (GND line):

Open wire check (GND line)

?1.	Turn the ignition switch to LOCK (0), or press the engine start/stop button to select the OFF mode.

?2.

Reconnect the following connectors.

VSA modulator-control unit 21P connector

Steering angle sensor 4P connector

?3.	Turn the ignition switch to ON (II), or press the engine start/stop button to select the ON mode.

?4.

Measure the voltage between test points 1 and 2.

Test condition	IG ON (II) or ON mode
Test circuit	GND
Test point 1	Steering angle sensor 4P connector No. 4 (BLK)
Test point 2	Body ground

Is there 0.1 V or less?


	YES

The GND wire is OK. Go to step 5.


	NO

Repair an open in the wire between the steering angle sensor and body ground (G503).?

Steering angle sensor check (substitution):

Steering angle sensor check (substitution)

?1.	Turn the ignition switch to LOCK (0), or press the engine start/stop button to select the OFF mode.

?2.	Substitute a known-good steering angle sensor.

?3.	Turn the ignition switch to ON (II), or press the engine start/stop button to select the ON mode.

?4.	Clear the DTC with the HDS.

?5.	Turn the ignition switch to LOCK (0), then turn it to ON (II) again, or select the OFF mode, then the ON mode.

?6.

Check for DTCs with the HDS.

Is DTC 86-19 indicated?


	YES

Go to step 6.


	NO

Replace the original steering angle sensor.?

VSA modulator-control unit check (update):

VSA modulator-control unit check (update)

?1.	Update the VSA modulator-control unit if it does not have the latest software.

?2.	Turn the ignition switch to LOCK (0), then turn it to ON (II) again, or select the OFF mode, then the ON mode.

?3.

Check for DTCs with the HDS.

DTC Description	DTC	Freeze Frame

Is DTC 86-19 indicated?


	YES

Check for loose terminals in the VSA modulator-control unit 21P connector. If the VSA modulator-control unit was updated and the symptom/indication is still present, replace the VSA modulator-control unit.?


	NO

Troubleshooting is complete. If any other DTCs are indicated, go to the indicated DTCs troubleshooting.?
