DTC P0016: CMP Sensor A and CKP Sensor Correlation
NOTE:
If DTC P0335 and/or P0339 are stored at the same time as DTC P0016, troubleshoot those DTCs first, then recheck for DTC P0016.

Problem verification:

Clear the DTC with the HDS.

Start the engine.

Check for Pending or Confirmed DTCs with the HDS.

Is DTC P0016 indicated?

     
YES
     
     
     
The failure is duplicated. Go to step 2.
     
NO
     
     
     
Intermittent failure, the system is OK at this time. Check for poor connections or loose terminals at the CKP sensor, CMP sensor A, and the PCM. If the on-board snapshot of this DTC is recorded, try to reproduce the failure under the same conditions with the on-board snapshot.?

CKP sensor and CMP sensor A installation check:

CKP sensor and CMP sensor A installation check

Turn the vehicle to the OFF (LOCK) mode.

?2.
Check that the CKP sensor and CMP sensor A are installed correctly.

Are the CKP sensor or CMP sensor A installed correctly?

     
YES
     
     
     
Installation is OK. Go to step 3.
     
NO
     
     
     
Installation is not correct, reinstall the CKP sensor and/or CMP sensor A.?

CMP pulse plate A visual check:

Remove CMP sensor A, and check for damage to CMP pulse plate A.

Is the pulse plate damaged?

     
YES
     
     
     
     
NO
     
     
     
Go to step 4.

Camshaft timing check:

Is the camshaft timing OK?

Go to step 5.
     
NO

Cam chain check:

Is the cam chain damaged or stretched?

     
YES

Go to step 6.

CKP sensor check:

Reconnect all connectors.

?3.
Turn the vehicle to the ON mode.

?4.
Clear the DTC with the HDS.

Start the engine.

?6.
Check for Pending or Confirmed DTCs with the HDS.

Is DTC P0016 indicated?

     
YES
     
     
     
The CKP sensor is OK. Check for any authorized service information related to the DTCs or symptoms you are troubleshooting, or substitute a known-good PCM, then recheck. If DTC P0016 goes away and the PCM was substituted, replace the original PCM.?
