DTC Troubleshooting: P16E3
DTC P16E3: PGM-FI-Battery Sensor LIN Communication Error
NOTE:
Before you troubleshoot, record all freeze data and any on-board snapshot, and review the general troubleshooting information.
Check for loose terminals on the battery sensor (battery negative (-) terminal).

1.
Problem verification:

Problem verification
?1.
Turn the ignition switch to ON (II) or press the engine start/stop button to select the ON mode.

?2.
Clear the DTC with the HDS, and wait about 60 seconds.


?3.
Check for Pending or Confirmed DTCs with the HDS.

Is DTC P16E3 indicated?

     
YES
     
     
     
The failure is duplicated. Go to step 2.
     
NO
     
     
     
Intermittent failure, the system is OK at this time. Check for poor connections or loose terminals at the the battery sensor and the gauge control module.

Battery sensor power supply check:

Battery sensor power supply check
?1.
Turn the ignition switch to LOCK (0) or press the engine start/stop button to select the OFF mode.

?2.
Disconnect the following connector.

?3.
Measure the voltage between test points 1 and 2.
Test condition
IG LOCK (0) or OFF mode
 
Battery sensor 3P connector: disconnected
Test circuit
+B HORN
Test point 1
Battery sensor 3P connector No. 2 (RED)
Test point 2
Body ground


Is there battery voltage?

     
YES
     
     
     
Go to step 3.
     
NO
     
     
     
Go to step 6.
3.
Determine possible failure area (battery sensor, others):

Determine possible failure area (battery sensor, others)
?1.
Turn the ignition switch to ON (II) or press the engine start/stop button to select the ON mode.

?2.
Measure the voltage between test points 1 and 2.
Test condition
IG ON (II) or ON mode
 
Battery sensor 3P connector: disconnected
Test circuit
LIN (BATT SENSOR)
Test point 1
Battery sensor 3P connector No. 3 (LT BLU)
Test point 2
Body ground


Is there 0 V?

     
YES
     
     
     
Go to step 4.
     
NO
     
     
     
4.
Shorted wire check (LIN (BATT SENSOR) line):

Shorted wire check (LIN (BATT SENSOR) line)
?1.
Turn the ignition switch to LOCK (0) or press the engine start/stop button to select the OFF mode.

?2.
Disconnect the following connector.

?3.
Check for continuity between test points 1 and 2.
Test condition
IG LOCK (0) or OFF mode
 
Battery sensor 3P connector: disconnected
Test circuit
LIN (BATT SENSOR)
Test point 1
Battery sensor 3P connector No. 3 (LT BLU)
Test point 2
Body ground


Is there continuity?

     
YES
     
     
     
Repair a short in the LIN (BATT SENSOR) wire between the battery sensor and the gauge control module, then do the repair verification.
     
NO
     
     
     
The LIN (BATT SENSOR) wire is not shorted. Go to step 5.
5.
Open wire check (LIN (BATT SENSOR) line):

Open wire check (LIN (BATT SENSOR) line)
?1.
Connect terminals A and B with a jumper wire.
Terminal A
Gauge control module connector A (32P) No. 23 (LT BLU)
Terminal B
Body ground


?2.
Check for continuity between test points 1 and 2.
Test condition
IG LOCK (0) or OFF mode
 
Battery sensor 3P connector: disconnected
Test circuit
LIN (BATT SENSOR)
Test point 1
Battery sensor 3P connector No. 3 (LT BLU)
Test point 2
Body ground


Is there continuity?

     
YES
     
     
     
The LIN (BATT SENSOR) wire is OK. Replace the gauge control module, then do the repair verification.
     
NO
     
     
     
Repair an open in the LIN (BATT SENSOR) wire between the battery sensor and the gauge control module, then do the repair verification.
6.
Fuse check:

Fuse check
?1.
Turn the ignition switch to LOCK (0) or press the engine start/stop button to select the OFF mode.

?2.
Check the following fuse.

No. A5 (10 A)
Location
Under-hood fuse/relay box

Is the fuse OK?

     
YES
     
     
     
Repair an open in the +B HORN wire between the battery sensor and the No. A5 (10 A) fuse in the under-hood fuse/relay box, then do the repair verification.
     
NO
     
     
     
Repair a short in the +B HORN wire between the battery sensor and the No. A5 (10 A) fuse in the under-hood fuse/relay box. Also replace the No. A5 (10 A) fuse, then do the repair verification.
Repair verification:

?1.
Turn the ignition switch to LOCK (0) or press the engine start/stop button to select the OFF mode.

?2.
Reconnect all connectors.

?3.
Turn the ignition switch to ON (II) or press the engine start/stop button to select the ON mode.

?4.


?5.
Check for Pending or Confirmed DTCs with the HDS.

Is DTC P16E3 indicated?

     
YES
     
     
     
Check for poor connections or loose terminals at the battery sensor and the gauge control module, then go to step 1.
     
NO
     
     
     
Troubleshooting is complete. If any other Pending or Confirmed DTCs are indicated, go to the indicated DTC's troubleshooting.?
