Starting System Symptom Troubleshooting Index

Without keyless access system

Symptom

Diagnostic procedure

Also check for

Engine does not crank

1.	Check for loose 12 volt battery terminals or connections.
2.	Test the 12 volt battery for a low state of charge.
3.	Check for PGM-FI DTCs.
4.	Check the starter.
5.	Check the relay circuit board.
6.	Check the starter system circuit troubleshooting.
7.	M/T: Check clutch pedal position switch A. CVT: Check the transmission range switch.
8.	Check the ignition switch and its related circuit.

	M/T: Poor ground at G305 CVT: Poor ground at G201
	Seized engine

Engine cranks, but does not start

1.	Check for PGM-FI DTCs.
2.	Check the PGM-FI main relays.
3.	Check the fuel pressure.
4.	Check for a plugged or damaged fuel line.
5.	Check for a plugged fuel filter.
6.	Check the throttle body.
7.	Check for low engine compression.
8.	Check the camshaft timing.
9.	Do the PCM reset in the PGM-FI System to cancel ALL INJECTORS STOP with the HDS.

	Fuel level in tank
	Weak or fouled spark plugs

Engine is hard to start

Do the symptom troubleshooting for engine will not start, engine starts but stalls immediately, or engine is hard to start.

Weak or fouled spark plugs

Engine cranks slowly

1.	Check for loose 12 volt battery terminals or connections.
2.	Test the 12 volt battery for a low state of charge.
3.	Check the starter for binding.
4.	Check for excessive drag in the engine.

With keyless access system

1.	Check for PGM-FI DTCs.
2.	Check the relay circuit board.
3.	Check for keyless access system symptom troubleshooting information.
4.	Check the fuel pressure.
5.	Check for a plugged or damaged fuel line.
6.	Check for a plugged fuel filter.
7.	Check the throttle body.
8.	Check for low engine compression.
9.	Check the camshaft timing.
10.	Do the PCM reset in the PGM-FI System to cancel ALL INJECTORS STOP with the HDS.
