CVT Transmission Removal and Installation

NOTE:
Engine support hanger AAR-T1256 must be used with the side engine mount installed.
Keep all foreign particles out of the transmission.
Use fender covers to avoid damaging painted surfaces.

2. Hood - Wide Open

1.
Open the hood, and secure it with the hood support rod (A) in the wide-open position (B).

9. PCM with Bracket - Remove


1.
Disconnect the connectors (A).

2.
Remove the harness clamps (B).

3.
Remove the harness holder (C).

4.
Remove the PCM (D) with the bracket.

10. Battery Base - Remove


1.
Remove the harness clamps (A).

2.
Remove the battery base (B).

NOTE: Loosen the bolts (C), without removing them.

11. Transmission Fluid Warmer - Remove


NOTE: To prevent damage, cover the connector (A) using a shop towel.

1.
Unclamp the transmission fluid warmer outlet hose from the hose clamp (B).

2.
Remove the transmission fluid warmer (C) with the O-rings (D) with the transmission fluid warmer hoses still connected.

NOTE: The transmission fluid warmer is aluminum part. Check the transmission fluid warmer for wear and damage.

3.
Put plastic bag over the transmission fluid warmer.

4.
Support the transmission fluid warmer using a strap.

12. Transmission Fluid Warmer Strainer - Remove


1.
Remove the transmission fluid warmer strainer (A) with the O-ring (B).

NOTE: Keep all foreign particles out of the transmission.

2.
Clean the transmission fluid warmer strainer if necessary. Replace the transmission fluid warmer strainer, if it is clogged or damaged.

NOTE:
Do not use compressed air to clean the transmission fluid warmer strainer.
Soak the transmission fluid warmer strainer thoroughly in transmission fluid.

13. Shift Cable (CVT Side) - Remove


1.
Remove the lock pin (A) and the control pin (B).

2.
Remove the shift cable end (C).





3.
Remove the shift cable bracket (A).

NOTE: Do not bend the shift cable excessively.

14. Connector - Disconnect

1.
Disconnect the connectors (A).






2.
Disconnect the connectors (A).
NOTE: To prevent damage, cover the connector (B) using the shop towel.






3.
Remove harness bracket A.

4.
Remove the harness bracket (B).





5.
Remove the harness clamps (A).





6.
Remove the harness holder (A).





7.
Disconnect the connector (A).





8.
Disconnect the connector (A).

15. Under-Hood Fuse/Relay Box - Remove


1.
Remove the under-hood fuse/relay box (A).

2.
Remove the harness clamp (B).

3.
Support the under-hood fuse/relay box using a strap.


NOTE: Hold the steering wheel with the steering wheel holder tool.

17. High Pressure Fuel Pump Cover - Remove


18. Fuel Bracket - Remove


1.
Disconnect the connectors (A).

2.
Remove the harness clamps (B).






3.
Remove the harness clamps (A).

4.
Remove the harness holder (B).






5.
Unclamp the heater hoses (A).

6.
Remove the fuel bracket (B).

19. Harness Holder - Remove


20. EVAP Canister Purge Valve - Remove


1.
Disconnect the connector (A).

2.
Remove the EVAP canister purge valve (B).

21. Universal Lifting Eyelet - Install

1.
Install the universal lifting eyelet with a spacer (A).

NOTE: Select a spacer that is long enough that the universal lifting eyelet does not interfere with the surrounding parts.

22. Engine Support Hanger - Install


1.
Remove the front damper caps.

2.
Install the engine support hanger onto the vehicle as shown.

3.
Attach the hook (A) to the slotted hole in the universal lifting eyelet.

4.
Tighten the wing nut (B) by hand, and lift and support the engine/transmission.

NOTE:
Be careful when working around the windshield.
Be careful not to damage the hood opener cable when installing the engine support hanger at the front bulkhead.

23. Front Engine Mount Mounting Bolt - Remove

1.
Remove the front engine mount stop (A) with the clamp bracket (B).





2.
Remove the front engine mount mounting bolt (A).

24. Rear Engine Mount Mounting Bolt - Remove


25. Upper Transmission Mount Bracket Mounting Bolt - Remove

NOTE: Do not remove the bolt (A) from the transmission mount. If the bolt is removed, the transmission mount must be replaced as an assembly.

27. Vehicle - Lift Up


30. Transmission Fluid - Drain


1.
Remove the drain plug (A), and drain the transmission fluid.

NOTE: Remove metal particles from the magnetic surface of the drain plug.

2.
Reinstall the drain plug with a new sealing washer (B).

31. Front Engine Mount Vacuum Pipe - Disconnect


1.
Remove the pipe clamp (A).

2.
Disconnect the front engine mount vacuum pipe (B).


NOTE: Do not remove secondary HO2S for under-floor TWC/exhaust pipe A.

1.
Remove exhaust pipe A or under-floor TWC/exhaust pipe A. Do not remove secondary HO2S for under-floor TWC/exhaust pipe A.

37. Torque Converter - Disconnect

1.
Remove the torque converter cover (A).





2.
Remove eight torque converter bolts (A) while rotating the crankshaft pulley.

38. Lower Transmission Mount Bracket Mounting Bolt - Remove

NOTE: Do not remove the bolt (A) from the lower transmission mount. If the bolt is removed, the lower transmission mount must be replaced as an assembly.


39. Front Subframe - Support


1.
Attach the subframe adapter to the front subframe by looping the strap (A) over the front of the front subframe, then secure the strap with the stop (B), then tighten the wing nut (C).

2.
Raise a transmission jack and line up the slots in the arms with the bolt holes on the corner of the jack base, then tighten the bolts.

40. Front Subframe - Remove

1.
Loosen the front subframe middle mount rubber mounting bolts (A) on both sides.






2.
Remove the front subframe (A) with the front stiffeners (B) and the rear stiffeners (C).

3.
Lower the front subframe carefully.

NOTE: Check that the front subframe is free of the hose and the electrical wiring.

41. Transmission - Jack Support

1.
Support the transmission with the transmission jack.


1.
Secure the driveshaft to the body with a nylon strap on both sides.

44. Rear Engine Mount Bracket Mounting Bolt - Remove


45. Lower Transmission Assembly Mounting Bolt - Remove

1.
Lower the transmission by loosening the wing nut of the engine support hanger, and tilt the engine just enough for the transmission to clear its end from the side frame.

2.
Remove the lower transmission assembly mounting bolts (A).

46. Transmission - Remove

1.
Check once again that the transmission is free of electrical wiring.

2.
Slide the transmission away from the engine/transmission by holding the torque converter in the transmission, then remove it from the vehicle.

NOTE: Be careful not to drop the torque converter.

49. Drive Plate - Inspect

1.
Inspect the drive plate, and replace it if it is damaged.

50. Harness Bracket - Remove




NOTE:
Keep all foreign particles out of the transmission.
Use fender covers to avoid damaging painted surfaces.

4. Transmission - Install

1.
Place the transmission on a transmission jack, and raise the transmission to the engine level.

2.
Attach the transmission on the engine.

5. Lower Transmission Assembly Mounting Bolt - Install

6. Rear Engine Mount Bracket Mounting Bolt - Install


9. Front Subframe - Install


1.
Attach the subframe adapter to the front subframe by looping the strap (A) over the front of the front subframe, then secure the strap with the stop (B), then tighten the wing nut (C).

2.
Raise the transmission jack and line up the slots in the arms with the bolt holes on the corner of the jack base, then tighten the bolts.


4.
Remove the subframe adapter and the transmission jack.





5.
Tighten the front subframe middle mount rubber mounting bolts (A) on both sides.

10. Lower Transmission Mount Bracket Mounting Bolt - Loosely Install


11. Lower Transmission Mount Mounting Nut - Loosen

1.
Loosen the lower transmission mount mounting nuts (A).

12. Torque Converter - Disconnect


1.
Rotate the engine crankshaft pulley as necessary to tighten the torque converter bolts (A) to half of the specified torque, then to the final torque in a crisscross pattern.

2.
After tightening the last torque converter bolt, check that the crankshaft rotates freely.





3.
Install the torque converter cover (A).

18. Front Engine Mount Vacuum Pipe - Connect


1.
Connect the front engine mount vacuum pipe (A).

2.
Install the pipe clamp (B).

23. Engine - Support

1.
Lift and support the engine/transmission with a jack and a wood block under the engine/transmission.

24. Engine Support Hanger - Remove

1.
Remove the engine support hanger.

2.
Install the front damper caps.

25. Rear Engine Mount Mounting Bolt - Loosely Install


26. Side Engine Mount Bracket Mounting Bolt - Loosen

1.
Loosen the side engine mount bracket mounting bolt (A).

27. Jack and Wood Block - Remove


28. Front Engine Mount Mounting Bolt - Install


29. Front Engine Mount Stop - Install

1.
Install the front engine mount stop (A) with the pipe bracket (B).

30. Rear Engine Mount Mounting Bolt - Tighten


31. Lower Transmission Mount Bracket Mounting Bolt - Tighten


32. Lower Transmission Mount Mounting Nut - Tighten


33. Side Engine Mount Bracket Mounting Bolt - Tighten


34. Upper Transmission Mount Bracket Mounting Bolt - Tighten


35. Universal Lifting Eyelet - Remove


36. EVAP Canister Purge Valve - Install


1.
Install the EVAP canister purge valve (A).

2.
Connect the connector (B).

NOTE: Check the connector for corrosion, dirt, or oil, and clean or repair if necessary.

37. Harness Holder - Install


38. Fuel Bracket - Install


1.
Install the fuel bracket (A).

2.
Clamp the heater hoses (B).






3.
Install the harness holder (A).

4.
Install the harness clamps (B).






5.
Install the harness clamps (A).

6.
Connect the connectors (B).

NOTE: Check the connectors for corrosion, dirt, or oil, and clean or repair if necessary.

39. High Pressure Fuel Pump Cover - Install


41. Under-Hood Fuse/Relay Box - Install


1.
Install the harness clamp (A).

2.
Install the under-hood fuse/relay box (B).

42. Connector - Connect

1.
Connect the connector (A).

NOTE: Check the connector for corrosion, dirt, or oil, and clean or repair if necessary.





2.
Connect the connector (A).

NOTE: Check the connector for corrosion, dirt, or oil, and clean or repair if necessary.





3.
Install the harness holder (A).





4.
Install the harness clamps (A).






5.
Install harness bracket A.

6.
Install the harness bracket (B).





7.
Connect the connectors (A).

NOTE: Check the connectors for corrosion, dirt, or oil, and clean or repair if necessary.





8.
Connect the connectors (A).

NOTE: Check the connectors for corrosion, dirt, or oil, and clean or repair if necessary.

43. Shift Cable (CVT Side) - Install

1.
Install the shift cable bracket (A).

NOTE: Do not bend the shift cable excessively.






2.
Apply molybdenum grease to the inner surface of the hole (A) in the shift cable end (B).

3.
Install the shift cable end.

4.
Install the control pin (C), and secure the control pin with the lock pin (D) in the direction shown.

44. Transmission Fluid Warmer Strainer - Install


1.
Clean the mounting surface of the transmission.

2.
Install the transmission fluid warmer strainer (A) with a new O-ring (B).

45. Transmission Fluid Warmer - Install


1.
Install the transmission fluid warmer (A) with new O-rings (B).

NOTE: The transmission fluid warmer is aluminum part. Check the transmission fluid warmer for wear and damage.

2.
Clamp the transmission fluid warmer outlet hose (C) with the hose clamp (D) at the white paint line (E).

46. Battery Base - Install


1.
Install the battery base (A).

2.
Install the harness clamps (B).

47. PCM with Bracket - Install


1.
Install the PCM (A) with the bracket.

2.
Install the harness holder (B).

3.
Connect the connectors (C).

4.
Install the harness clamps (D).

55. Transmission - After Install Check

1.
Set the parking brake. Start the engine, and shift the transmission through all positions three times.

2.
Check the shift lever operation, the A/T gear position indicator operation, and the shift cable adjustment.
